So Glad I Dont Live In PW County.

I wrote the following to Virginia Delegate Bob Marshall after reading his comments, today.  I’ll link them around as you read the note.  Needless to say, I’m kinda pissed.

I have never been so glad to not live in Prince William County than today.

You are an embarrassment to the United States of America, never mind a major stain on the state of Virginia.

First you wrongly assume that abortions cause birth defects (low birth weight and prematurity are not birth defects), then you effectively declare that everyone is wrong and you did not say exactly what you were quoted as saying.  Do you think we are deaf?  Dumb?

Today I read that you suggested the reaction against Cuccinelli might be an attack against his Catholic faith.  No.  It’s not.  I didnt even know that Cuccinelli was Catholic.

I was raised a Catholic.  I was baptized, I took communion, and was in classes for confirmation when my priest told me that I was a bad person.  Why would such a man call a 14 year old girl a bad person?  Because I said that not all people who are pro choice are bad people.

He humiliated me in front of my friends and my teacher.  I walked out of the class, my head held high, and told him that I wasnt a bad person.  That I didnt discriminate against people and there was no way that I could personally choose to have an abortion, but God forbid I tell a raped or battered woman what she should do with her own body.

I never walked back into that classroom.  And I am a much better person for it.

Cuccinelli might be correct in that it is above the law to state that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is not tolerated in Virginia state offices.  But you have to understand that these are people’s lives he is talking about.

Imagine being told that you could not be elected a delegate because you are white.  Or because you are male.  Or because you are old.  How does that make you feel?  You were born white, you were born male and you will always continue to grow old.  None of those things you can change about yourself because it is who you are.

The same thing goes for homosexuals or the transgendered.  That you dont understand that is terrifying, and that you dont understand that and represent a full spectrum of people in a large swath of Virginia is horrifying.  You represent gay people, you represent straight people.  You represent Muslims and Protestants and Catholics and Jews.  You represent the religious and the atheistic.  All alike.

Changing the definition of protected classes against discrimination is a must.  We are one of the last developed countries in the world who still have a question mark for homosexual civil rights.  And that you still believe it is a sin is narrow minded and foolish.

Religion has absolutely no place in creating and enacting law.  When you state that Planned Parenthood is a source of social ills because a priest told you so, you are hurting America.  You are a lawmaker.  You should know better than to impose your religion on the thousands of people that you represent in your district.  You are allowing your religion to cloud your judgment on what is best for Virginia.

And as an aside, Planned Parenthood provides free or discounted health care, birth control, and a wide array of educational classes to prevent the need for an abortion in the first place.  That they perform abortions is a footnote.  You should, at the least, get behind the need to prevent an abortion in the first place.

I am so glad that I am not in your district.  You do not represent me at all.  You do, however, represent my parents, my brother, and his children.  And that makes me sad.  Because they have a shameful man pretending that he’s speaking for them when all along promoting his religion and misguided ideas of human beings.

If you are an example of the majority of Virginia, I dont want to be a Virginian anymore.  And if you are an example of the majority of our country, I fear for the future.

Yeah, I sent that all via his online contact form.  I know he’ll never get back in contact with me, or if he does, it wont be personal, but rather a form letter.

I dunno, maybe my “You are an embarrassment to the United States of America, never mind a major stain on the state of Virginia” was a little too harsh… nah.  It was apt.  According to his wiki page, this guy is a nut job of the most epic degree.  I wonder why he almost won the GOP nomination against Gilmore for the senate… not that you could really win against Mark Warner in Virginia.

Maybe we should move out of this state after M is done with his PhD.  I dunno.  Hopefully it’ll get better.  I dont think it will, though.
